Information about becoming a Certified Clinical Chemist Technologist: 

A clinical laboratory scientist, which includes a Certified Clinical Chemist Technologist, is an individual who has received both formal education in life sciences and chemistry as well as training in the performance and evaluation of clinically important tests used to evaluate the health of patients and to assist in the diagnosis of disease.  Historically, clinical laboratory scientists have worked in hospital laboratories.  Today, while as many as 50% of these individuals still practice in hospital clinical laboratories, many also choose careers in reference laboratories and in the inv vitro diagnostics industry.

Most clinical laboratory scientists have college degrees and at least one year of apprenticeship prior to working full time in a clinical laboratory.  There are a variety of career paths for clinical laboratory scientists.  Most are still trained as medical technologists.  Many of these individuals choose to document their proficiency by taking the examination of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists(ASCP) for medical technology.  Clinical chemistry technologists may also take a specialty examination from the ASCP or take the examination given by the National Registry for Clinical Chemistry(NRCC).  Clinical Chemists with a doctorate degree may document their proficiency by taking the examination of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (ABCC), or the American Board of Bioanalysis, or the NRCC examination.  Individuals with expertise in toxicology my take the toxicology examination of the ABCC.  Recently, there has been interest in Molecular Biochemistry as a separate discipline of Clinical Laboratory Medicine.  An examination in Molecular Biochemistry is being developed by the ABCC.

Many States have specific license examinations for each of the Clinical Laboratory Scientists disciplines.  It is important that you contact the State Department of Health Services where you intend to work prior to accepting employment.  This will ensure that you are properly licensed.  New York, Florida and California have specific requirements to practice Laboratory Medicine and rigorous penalties for those who practice without a license.
